Artificial intelligence and digital technology are rapidly becoming part of everyday healthcare, changing how medical professionals are trained, how patient information is managed and how diseases may be detected.
From AI-assisted medical imaging to electronic health records and digital health education, recent developments show that healthcare technology is moving increasingly from research laboratories into real-world settings.
AI Enters the Medical Classroom
In Pakistan, the growing role of artificial intelligence in healthcare was highlighted at SIMPACT 2026, a healthcare simulation conference held in Karachi and Nairobi.
The event brought together clinicians, educators, researchers and technology innovators to explore AI, immersive technologies and advanced analytics in healthcare education and patient safety.
Projects showcased in Karachi included an Urdu-English AI avatar for medical training, a chatbot focused on adolescent health education and an AI-assisted tuberculosis screening system.
These projects demonstrate how technology can be adapted to local languages and healthcare needs rather than relying solely on systems developed for other markets.
Digital Records Expand in Pakistan
Digital transformation is also reaching healthcare facilities outside major Pakistani cities.
Tando Allahyar recently became the first district in Sindh to introduce daily digital health reporting and electronic medical records through the District Health Information System. The initiative is intended to improve information management and provide data that can support healthcare planning and service delivery.
The experience could provide a model for expanding digital health systems to other rural districts, although long-term sustainability, staff training and infrastructure will remain important factors.
AI Could Support Health Education
Researchers are also examining how conversational AI could be used to improve health literacy in Pakistan.
A study published in September 2026 explored the potential of conversational AI, including voice-enabled systems, for maternal and child health education. Researchers noted that Pakistan’s widespread mobile-phone access and established community-health-worker network could provide infrastructure for delivering health information at scale. However, the study also emphasized that evidence is still limited on whether AI-based health information produces measurable improvements in health outcomes.
Medical Imaging Gets an AI Boost
The international AI-health landscape is also developing quickly.
Alibaba’s research organization has open-sourced an AI model called Damo Radar, which is designed to analyze contrast-enhanced CT scans and identify a broad range of abdominal diseases and abnormalities. According to reporting on the research, the system was evaluated on nearly 40,000 real-world examinations covering 146 clinical findings.
Such systems could potentially assist radiologists by highlighting abnormalities and organizing large amounts of imaging information. They are not, however, a substitute for clinical evaluation and appropriate medical oversight.
The Need for Responsible AI
As AI becomes more deeply integrated into healthcare, questions about safety, accountability and data quality are becoming increasingly important.
The World Health Organization’s European office recently argued that responsible progress in healthcare AI should be measured by the strength of governance rather than simply the speed at which systems are deployed. It identified fragmented or biased datasets, unclear accountability and gaps in AI literacy among the continuing challenges.
This means that successful digital healthcare will require more than sophisticated algorithms. Hospitals and health authorities will also need strong privacy protections, reliable data systems, trained professionals and clear rules for evaluating AI technologies.

The combination of AI, electronic medical records, mobile technology and digital education is creating new possibilities for healthcare.
In Pakistan and around the world, technology is increasingly being used to support medical training, organize patient information, assist with disease detection and deliver health education.
The next challenge will be ensuring that these innovations are introduced responsibly and that their benefits reach patients and healthcare workers—not just technology companies.
The future of healthcare may be increasingly digital, but the central goal remains human: providing safer, more accessible and better-informed care.
